In the hearts and minds of Buddhists, the arrival of summer brings with it the familiar terms “Vassa” (The Rains Retreat) and “Truong Ha” (Monastic Retreat Center) Offerings. However, for many young people or those new to Buddhism, the profound meaning and core values of this tradition may not yet be fully understood.
To shed light on this beautiful tradition, the Thien Tri Information Page would like to share the origin and core meaning of the “Truong Ha” Offering activity:
- The Origin: This tradition dates back to the time of the historical Buddha. During the rainy season in India (which coincides with the summer months in Vietnam), insects and crawling creatures multiply abundantly. To protect the lives of these small living beings, prevent monks from accidentally stepping on them during their daily alms rounds, and avoid the hardships of severe weather, the Buddha established a monastic rule: For three months during the rainy season, monks and nuns are to cease their travels and gather in one place to restrain their body and mind, while diligently cultivating Precepts, Concentration, and Wisdom (Sila – Samadhi – Panna). This period is known as Vassa (The Rains Retreat / Monsoon Retreat).
- “Trường hạ” (or Hạ trường – the Retreat giới trường) is not a conventional academic school, but rather a dedicated sanctuary where monastics gather for intensive practice and study during this designated period.
- What is a “Trường hạ” Offering? Since monks and nuns undergo strict confinement, staying in one place without going outside for alms, all their daily necessities, food, and medicine for the entire three months rely completely on the generosity of lay Buddhists. Therefore, making a “Trường hạ” Offering is the act of offering pure financial support (tịnh tài) and material requisites (tịnh vật — such as rice, noodles, cooking oil, medicine, and other essentials) to the retreat centers to support the daily sustenance and spiritual cultivation of the monastic community.
- The Core Value: Consequently, “Trường hạ” Offerings play a vital role in supporting and preserving the Right Dharma (Saddharma). The generosity of lay Buddhists serves as the most practical foundation to sustain the continuous spiritual practice of Buddhism, ensuring that the lineage and spiritual vitality of the Dharma endure through time.
- The Spirit of Giving: A “Trường hạ” Offering does not depend on the quantity or material value of the gifts, but truly lies in the reverence and purity of heart of the giver.
